Jill Mellors, aged 35 is mother to Amy 2 and Sam 1. Sam has Cystic Fibrosis, which was diagnosed when he was born. Jill recently took part in a Tandem Skydive from 14,000 feet at Brigg. Jill said, "Although I thought I was going to get very nervous, I never did, I was more excited than anything .Ten people went up in a very small plane and everyone but me jumped regularly. At 14,000 feet they opened the door and I was the last to jump. We were way above the clouds and it took about 20 minutes to get up and 20 minutes to descend. It was great and I would have liked to have gone straight back up and done it again!"
The jump raised just over £2000 and the Yorkshire Electricity Board, who my husband, Robert, works for is doubling it! Totalling just over £4000. Half of the money is going to Cystic Fibrosis Trust, whose aim is to fund an cure for the most common life threatening genetic disease, the other half is to go to Caring for Cystic Fibrosis, which is the charity set up by the children's families with suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and who have all been treated at Sheffield Children's Hospital. Big thank you to all who have sponsored and further donations are very welcome. Please phone Jill on 01709 360253. Art
Regularly exhibiting her paintings with the Northern Society for Botanical Art, Mrs Margaret Sanderson of Woodland Way, Herringthorpe, has recently had a collection of her paintings in the Central Library, Rotherham.
Margaret works mainly in water colours and last year exhibited at London's Natural History Museum, followed by one of the Royal Horticultural Society winter shows - from which she was awarded a coveted bronze medal.
Originally trained as a nurse, Margaret confesses to never having has enough spare time for hobbies, and it was not until her two daughters were grown-up that she became really interested in art. That was about 10 years ago.
Since then she has concentrated mainly upon flowers and butterflies and a couple of years ago successfully applied for a place on a course of Botanical Illustration at Sheffield University - at the end of which she gained a certificate in recognition of her good work.
Among Margaret's local patrons she is warmly known as "The Butterfly Lady". Her paintings, which may be commissioned, are painstakingly accurate as well as being true works of art.
Public MeetingThere will be a public meeting, which will also include a short Annual General Meeting on 27th June at 6.30pm at Whiston Worrygoose School. Anyone wishing to attend is more than welcome. Sue Cochran, who has been out treasurer since the group started, has recently resigned from the post; we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her hard work. We would also like to welcome Angela McFadden who has taken over from Sue. Unfortunately the Fundraising Fashion Show and Sale we organised, which should have taken place on May 21st had to be cancelled due to a lack of ticket sales. Finally, we are pleased to receive all the positive feedback we have had regarding the security lighting which has been fitted to bungalows and the two downstairs flats on the estate.
